John Kamau Mwangi

March 14, 1952 — January 8, 2026

"A devoted father, mentor, and servant of God. His wisdom lives on in all who knew him."

Life Story

John Kamau Mwangi was born on the 14th of March, 1952, in Kiambu District, to the late Mwangi wa Kariuki and Wangari Mwangi. He grew up in a close-knit family and attended Kiambu Primary School before proceeding to Alliance High School, where he excelled in mathematics and sciences. After completing his A-levels, John secured a scholarship to the University of Nairobi, graduating in 1976 with a degree in Civil Engineering. He dedicated over three decades to public service, working with the Ministry of Roads and Infrastructure, where he played a pivotal role in the construction of several key roads across Central Kenya. John married his beloved wife, Grace Njeri, in 1979, and together they raised four children: Samuel, Ruth, David, and Esther. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather to eight grandchildren, who lovingly called him "Babu John." An active member of St. Paul's ACK Church in Kiambu for over forty years, John served as a church elder and was known for his generosity and quiet wisdom. He mentored dozens of young engineers throughout his career and remained committed to community development well into retirement. John passed on peacefully at Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi, on the 8th of January 2026, surrounded by his family. He is deeply missed but leaves behind a legacy of integrity, hard work, and faith.

My Partner of 46 Years

John was the most patient, loving man I have ever known. He never raised his voice, never gave up on our family, and never stopped believing in each of us. I will carry his quiet strength with me every day for the rest of my life.

The Standard I Will Always Chase

My father showed me what it means to work with integrity and live with purpose. Every bridge he built still stands. Every lesson he taught still echoes. Dad, you were the greatest man I will ever know.

A Giant in the Ministry

John joined the Ministry a year before me and became my mentor without ever being asked. He had a gift for seeing the solution before anyone else saw the problem. Kenya's road network is better because of him.
